22 July Memorial: Upholding

Matias Faldbakken’s proposal En opprettholdelse has been selected as the winning design for the national memorial after 22 July. The work will be realized in the new Government Quarter and will stand as a lasting remembrance of the 2011 terrorist attacks.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

The exhibition opened on June 24, 2025, and will remain on display on the center's second floor

As part of our temporary exhibition, you can now see a presentation of the winning proposal for the national 22 July memorial at the 22 July Centre. The exhibition offers insight into the concept behind the artwork and how it will be realized. This is a unique opportunity to get to know the future memorial – and to reflect on what a national act of remembrance can and should be.

The exhibition is on view on the Centre’s second floor.

The work is based on the steel rig used to move Picasso’s The Fishermen from the demolished Y-block to the new A-block. The rig will be filled with a mosaic depicting a wading bird reflected in Lake Tyrifjorden. The reverse side features a geometric painting in deep blue, green, and strong red.

The sculpture is at once a historical document, a readymade, and a painting – linking Utøya and the Government Quarter.
